5G is a technology for which many people may be waiting because it promises faster loading web-pages and better connectivity at a lower price. And today, at Qualcomm's Snapdragon Tech Summit, Qualcomm's EVP for Technology, Cristiano Amon said that the much talked about 5G technology may happen sooner than we expect it to. Speaking about the technology, he said that 5G is about delivering fibre-like speed to mobile devices, and significantly reducing the cost per bit than what it is today. Amon said that 5G lowers the infrastructure at the enterprise level, which in turn leads to cheaper rates. He said that the transition to 5G will be a very profound one in the wireless industry. Requoting Qualcomm's example from CES 2017, Amon said, "5G transition will make connectivity similar to electricity. When electricity started, it caused a revolution in the society and people started talking about use cases. With 5G, when not only our devices but everything is connected, we won't be talking about use cases anymore. We are instead going to assume that connectivity will be there - the same way we approach electricity today. That's why 5G is a very significant for the wireless industry." Speaking further about the 5G technology, Amon said that it will happen in the first half of 2019. Tracing back to Mobile World Congress 2017, he said that 40 companies back then joined Qualcomm to accelerate entry of 5G. He further added that they are now very close to getting standardisation on schedule. At the same event, Qualcomm unveiled its Snapdragon 845 mobile platform and Asus NovaGo 2-in-1 convertible and HPENVY X2 - the first two laptops that run on Windows 10 and are powered by Snapdragon 835 got showcased. It was also announced that Lenovo's laptop powered by Snapdragon 835 processor will be unveiled at CES 2018.
